The Magdalene Sisters

(18)

Based on the true accounts of the Magdalene laundries in Ireland, which eventually closed in 1996 after an estimated 30,000 women had been detained, 'The Magdalene Sisters' follows the story of three of these young women in Dublin, 1964.

Margaret (Anne-Marie Duff) is raped by her cousin at a family wedding and is considered to have shamed her family. Bernadette (Nora-Jane Noone), resident of a local orphanage, is unaware that her blossoming good looks are set to undermine her future and Rose (Dorothy Duffy) has just given birth out of wedlock and has her son forcibly removed from her. All three are sent to the Magdalene asylum against their wills.

This movie was excellent, after reading this book I had to watch the movie. Difficult to believe that these events really happened. I really enjoyed this movie and would recommend this to anyone.
