South Pacific

(U)

Can a girl from Little Rock find happiness with a mature French planter she got to know one enchanted evening away from the military hospital where she is a nurse? Or should she just wash that man out of her hair? Bloody Mary (Juanita Hall) is the philosopher of the island and it's hard to believe she could be the mother of Liat who has captured the heart of Lt. Joseph Cable USMC (John Kerr). While waiting for action in the war in the South Pacific, sailors and nurses put on a musical comedy show. The war gets closer and the saga of Nellie Forbush (Mitzi Gaynor) and Emile de Becque (Rossano Brazzi) becomes serious drama.

Ray Walston, France Nuyen, Russ Brown, Floyd Simmons, Tom Laughlin, Jack Mullaney, Ken Clark, Archie Savage, Candace Lee, Warren Hsieh, Francis Kahele.

Watched this when I was younger and this was a really great movie. Thought the story line was good, not to sure about the music though, as I'm not really into musicals. Not to keen on the ending but all in all a good movie!!!

Fiddler On The Roof

(U)

An outstanding accomplishment in every way, this lavishly produced and critically acclaimed screen adaptation of the international stage sensation tells the life-affirming story of Tevye (Topol), a poor milkman whose love, pride and faith help him face the oppression of turn-of-the-century Tsarist Russia. Nominated eight Academy Awards (1971), including Best Picture and Best Director and featuring such classic songs as "If I were a rich man", "Matchmaker" and "Sunrise, Sunset", Fiddler on the Roof is a universal story of hope, love and acceptance - a musical masterpiece.

Norma Crane
, Leonard Frey, Molly Picon, Paul Mann, Rosalind Harris, Michele Marsh, Neva Small, Paul Michael Glaser, Ray Lovelock.

Fiddler on the Roof is an all-time classic movie, this is excellent movie for all those who love musicals. The movie offers a view of the historical past of a Jewish village in Russia and a look at Jewish traditions and love in that context. I would recommend this to all who love musicals!!!

West Side Story

(PG)

Garnering a total of ten Academy Awards - including Best Picture of 1961 - West Side Story set a brilliant standard for movie musicals that remains unsurpassed to this day. Directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins from Ernest Lehman's spectacular screenplay, the film combines the unforgettable score of Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim with Robbins' exuberant choreography to create a transcendent fusion of realism and fantasy that will forever be a feast for the eye, the ear, and ultimately, the heart. A triumph on every level, this electrifying musical sets the ageless tragedy of Romeo and Juliet against a backdrop of gang warfare in the slums of 1950's New York.

Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn, George Chakiris, Simon Oakland, Ned Glass, William Bramley, Tucker Smith, Tony Mordente, David Winters, Eliot Feld.

I remember watch this when I was younger with my mum & dad and thought it was fantastic. West Side Story was made in the early sixties and set in the fifties, its not like other musicals, it has a powerful story of love and prejudice! west Side Story is a definite watch for all musical lovers and anyone who enjoys a bit of camp fun!

My Fair Lady

(U)

By George, they've got it! Newly transferred from elements painstakingly restored in 1994, the film version of Lerner and Loewe's My Fair Lady is lavish, lovely and the acclaimed recipient of eight 1964 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director (George Cukor).

Best Actor Oscar winner Rex Harrison reprises his signature stage role of Henry Higgins, the supremely assured phoeneticist who wagers that under his tutelage, cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle can pass for a duchess at the embassy ball. In one of her best-loved roles. Audrey Hepburn plays Eliza. If ever there was a face the professor could grow accustomed to, it's hers. In Hertford, Hereford and Hampshire (and elsewhere) no one's fairer than My Fair lady, one of the most irresistible musicals ever.

Stanley Holloway, Gladys Cooper, Jeremy Brett, Theodore Bikel, Mona Washbourne, Isobel Elsom, John Holland.

The whole cast acted and sang well in this movie, I'm not into musicals so I thought this was a bit corny and stupid. If your into musicals then you'll loved, I'm glad I watched it, but I'd never watch it again.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

(U)

In the early 20th century England, eccentric Caractacus Potts (Dick Van Dyke) works as an inventor, a job which barely supports himself, his equally eccentric father, and his two adolescent children, Jeremy (Adrian Hall) and Jemima (Heather Ripley). But they're all happy. When the children beg their father to buy for them their favorite plaything - a broken down jalopy of a car sitting at a local junk yard - Caractacus does whatever he can to make some money to buy it. One scheme to raise money involves the unexpected assistance of a pretty and wealthy young woman they have just met named Truly Scrumptious (Sally Ann Howes), the daughter of a candy factory owner. But Caractacus eventually comes into another one time only windfall of money, enough to buy the car. Using his inventing skills, Caractacus transforms the piece of junk into a beautiful working machine, which they name Chitty Chitty Bang Bang because of the noise the engine makes. At a seaside picnic with his children and Truly, Caractacus spins a fanciful tale of an eccentric inventor, his pretty girlfriend who is the daughter of a candy factory owner, his two children, and a magical car named Chitty all in the faraway land of Vulgaria. The ruthless Baron Bomburst (Gert Frobe), the ruler of Vulgaria, will do whatever he can to get his hands on the magical car. But because of Baroness Bomburst's (Anne Quayle) disdain for them, what are outlawed in Vulgaria are children, including the unsuspecting children of a foreign inventor of a magical car.

Lionel Jeffries, Benny Hill, James Robertson Justice, Robert Helpmann, Barbara Windsor.

This movie is a great family movie. It is one that the whole family can enjoy. It is really imaginative and makes you want to sing along, a great story. If you have yet seen it, I recommend do a great family movie!!!

Guys and Dolls

(U)

Based on the Broadway show from the Damon Runyon short story and filled to the brim with Frank Loesser tunes such as "Luck Be a Lady" and "Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat," this outrageously comic film featuring Marlon Brando's bold musical debut is a colorful tale about gamblers, a feisty Salvation Army lass, and a dance-hall girl with a pining heart.

Veteran gambler Sky Masterson (Brando) takes a bet from Nathan Detroit (Frank Sinatra) that he can win the affection of a "soldier" (Jean Simmons) in the Salvation Army, setting himself up to lose both his money and his heart. Romance is the last thing the gambler and the missionary expect, and they fight against their attraction for all they're worth in glowing singing and dancing numbers.

Love proves to be contagious as spicy dancer Miss Adelaide, in a role re-created for the screen from Broadway by showstopper Vivian Blaine, is determined to get her fiance, Nathan, to the altar one way or another. Stubby Kaye and B.S. Pully also reprise their stage roles in this glorious Cinemascope film that earned four Academy Award nominations. GUYS AND DOLLS consistently ranks among the most popular film musicals of all time.

I'm not always one for musicals. This really is Marlon Brando at his best and the story, whilst not the most complicated, has enough structure and theme to make this much more than just a set of good songs strung together. This is a great classic!!

Only watched this a couple of nights ago for the first time, I thought it was quite good as far as musicals go. It is great for all those who love musicals.

I remember seeing and enjoying Sound of Music in the late 70's. Now my children have seen it on TV and they love it as well. A excellent movie if you haven't yet seen it.

Cinderella

(U)

In this Rogers & Hammerstein musical version of the classical fairy tale, where only the genetic miscasting surpasses the implausibility of most colors and sets, a royal heir is as bored with court life as fascinated with commoners lives, but his mother commands another grand ball in his name- he only concedes to attend if another lack of acceptable marital candidates wins him the right to switch to a selection process of his choice. However Cinderella (Brandy Norwood), a black stepdaughter (de facto maid) gets to attend till midnight by the magic of her fairy godmother (Whitney Houston), and unlike her hideous stepsisters is the only one to captures his heart, so when she rushes off he orders every young woman in the kingdom should fit her left behind glass slipper...

Whoopi Goldberg, Bernadette Peter, Veanne Cox, Natalie Desselle, Paolo Montalban, Jason Alexander, Victor Garber.

The music is great as well as the dancing and acting!! It maybe cheesy but I wouldn't expect anything else from Disney! Ive watched this movie a few times with my daughter! Fantastic childrens movie!! Great old Disney works its magic again!

Ford certainly got the best out of Shirley by teaming her up with Victor McLaglen. Its full of action and sentiment and pure Ford, foreshadowing his later U.S.Cavalry trilogy.

Use to love this movies when I was growing up.
