Meteor

(PG)

As a five-mile-wide asteroid hurtles towards Earth, scientist Paul Bradley - inventor of Hercules, a revolutionary satellite missile launching system - tries to warn the U.S. government of the impending danger. But because of his fanatical anti-Soviet sentiment, General Adlon refuses to heed Bradley's warnings and turn the missiles away from their Soviet targets to aim them towards outer space. Now Bradley and his Soviet counterpart, Dubov, have to convince their stubborn governments that the meteor is a real danger to the entire planet... and that they must destroy the menace before it hits home.

I have watched this movie several times and have always enjoyed it. The characters are all there, truculent brilliant scientist, diplomatic scientist, Russian bear scientist, not to mention anti Russian general and a nice mix of oddballs. No real baddies except that piece of rock hurtling towards us and our doom. As disaster movies go one of the better ones from that era without all the over-angst. Could it happen? Food for thought.
